Belmont Home Additions Can Be Trickier for Pet Owners
Many pets are uncomfortable when strangers are in the home. Some pets become very protective of their family when the normal routine is broken or there are strange noises or people. Animals also tend to be very territorial and do not like strangers on their turf. Pets and remodeling often are not a good combination.
Having pets around a Belmont home addition or remodeling area can be uncomfortable for both workers and pets. It can also be dangerous for both. In many cases, however, the extent of the Belmont remodel does not warrant putting your pet in a kennel during the remodel. To help you evaluate the best way to handle your pet during a Belmont home addition, here are a few tips.
1. Remember that animals tend to be territorial – they define and defend their space. If your Belmont home addition will involve an area of your home or your yard customarily inhabited by your pet, you will make life easier for yourself, your pet and the construction team if you gradually move your pet to another area before the remodeling work begins. Then when the remodeling crew arrives, you pet will be lest distressed and less likely to become aggressive.
2. If the Belmont home addition will obstruct the pet’s customary path to the exterior get your pet accustomed to taking a different path before construction begins. This will reduce the frustration and stress for your pet and increase the possibility that your pet will stay away from the construction area and the dangers associated with it.
3. If your pet goes outdoors and construction will occur in or near the pet’s favorite area, redirect the pet to a different area of the yard before construction begins to prevent injury from construction materials or debris.
4. Seal off the construction are so your pet will not be able to enter it and risk injury. A pet can be injured by stepping on sharp objects or by accidentally causing construction materials to fall. The safest thing for your pet is to ensure that it cannot enter the construction area.
5. If the remodel will involve your pet’s normal feeding area, begin training the pet to look for its food in another area before construction begins. This will make the transition easier and cause less stress for you and your pet.
6. Alert your Belmont contractor and the workers if your pet will be on the premises during the remodel. Particularly if your pet tends to be curious or territorial, they will know they need to be careful about leaving anything around that could harm your pet.
7. Do not leave your pet home alone during the home addition construction. Leaving a pet home alone when there are strange people making lots of noise will be either stressful or frightening to your pet. Remember that animals tend to assess the severity of a threat posed by something new or strange by the pitch of the sound it makes. The lower the noise, the greater will be the perceived threat. Construction is often accompanied by a number of low and loud noises.
8. If your pet is not friendly with strangers or tends to be afraid of them, it might be a good time to send the pet on a vacation. You might consider sending your pet to visit friends or relatives with whom the pet is comfortable. Alternatively, you could send the pet to a pet vacation destination (these do exist) or to the local kennel.
9. If you are doing a whole house remodel, you should probably consider sending your pet on a vacation. The confusion, noise and strangers will be stressful for your pet.
10. If your Belmont remodel requires you to stay in a hotel or motel all or part of the time, you might want to choose a pet-friendly hotel or motel for your time away from home. Keeping your pet with you will reduce fear and confusion for the pet.
You will certainly need to determine the extent of your Belmont remodel and then consider how it will or will not affect your pet. You know your pet better than anyone. Keeping in mind, however, that changes bring stress and fear for pets, and considering how your pet reacts to that stress and to strangers will help you make smart choices about how to help your pet endure the experience.
